Better Dive Watch: Tudor Pelagos vs Rolex Submariner vs Omega Seamaster

If you’re on the lookout for a black dial dive watch that is one of the better models on the market, it’s likely you’re torn between the Tudor Pelagos, Rolex Submariner, or the Omega Seamaster.

Each is clearly capable, while they’re more expensive than the average timepiece. They’re priced in a similar bracket, while they each have various pros and cons, which we’ll get into below.

Pelagos vs Submariner vs Seamaster

We’ve looked at the capabilities of each watch in-depth, purely in terms of how they perform as a dive watch. Of course, they all have a range of features and extras, while the build quality is unquestionable. The same is true for aesthetic appeal, as they can comfortably be worn throughout the day when you have no plans to go anywhere near any water.

Tudor Pelagos

The most affordable of the trio is the Tudor Pelagos, and it’s where we’ll begin. (It’s worth noting that the brand remains a sister company to Rolex, with both companies being owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation.) It might be seen as a sub-brand, but they have worked to differentiate themselves by specializing in tool watches, used by divers and the military.

In terms of diving features, the Pelagos is guaranteed to a depth of 500 meters and is equipped with a helium escape valve, which helps to ensure the preservation of the piece underwater. The 500m limit vastly exceeds the Rolex Submariner seen below.

The Pelagos has a titanium bracelet featuring a steel folding clasp with a unique auto-adjustable spring mechanism. As they explain;

“This technical system allows the bracelet to be adjusted during a dive, contracting when the combination is compressed at greater depths, and expanding when the pressure decreases again during the diver’s return to the surface.”

An additional rubber strap is also provided, equipped with an extension system that makes it easily adjustable for all diving conditions. Meanwhile, Tudor also offers a version for left-handed divers, which they’ve named LHD (Left Hand Drive).

Above all, there’s a lot on offer for diving enthusiasts, while it’s less expensive than you might expect.

Rolex Submariner

With new models released in 2020, the Rolex Submariner is arguably the number one diving watch in terms of price and prestige. 2020 Submariner watches now feature a redesigned, slightly larger 41 mm case, and a slightly remodeled bracelet.

It can split between either day or night mode, thanks to an ‘innovative luminescent Chromalight display’ that improves visibility in dark environments, which is an important feature for divers. (The hands and hour markers are coated with a luminescent material that emits a long-lasting blue glow in dark conditions.)

This is coupled with a crisp black dial, that aims to improve underwater visibility by using simple shapes such as triangles, circles, rectangles – and broad hour and minute hands which ‘enable instant and reliable reading to prevent any risk of confusion underwater’.

In practice, the case is waterproof to 300 meters, which is significantly lower than the Tudor model seen above.

The Submariner is also outperformed by the Seamaster below, but it does benefit from the prestige associated with the Rolex brand (read: Best 1960s Rolex Vintage Watches). This is also reflected in the asking price, as it retails for twice as much as the Pelagos.

They generally tend to hold value well, and it could be the best option if you’re hoping to maximize resale value in the future.

Omega Seamaster

As the name suggests, the Omega Seamaster is another collection that is aimed at divers. We’ve decided to look at the ‘Deep Black’ selection, as they’re the most comparable in terms of price and quality to the Submariner. (In fact, they are slightly more expensive overall, and they’re also special editions, so there’s a better chance of seeing success on the resale market.)

Models from the Deep Black range are made from a single block of black ceramic that forms the case body, making it exceptionally light on the wrist.

As Omega explains; “The term “deep black” is not a shallow boast. These are serious divers’ watches, able to withstand the pressures of the ocean at 60 bar (600 m) and packed with crucial tech for exploring beneath the waves.”

There are five options to choose from, including Black and 18K Sedna gold models. It’s a modern option compared to the understated Submariner in terms of design, but it’s another worthy addition to this list.

Tudor Pelagos vs Rolex Submariner vs Omega Seamaster: Overall

There’s little doubt that any of the trios will effectively handle any needs while diving, while they’re all aesthetically pleasing in their own way.

But which is best for divers?

Arguably the Pelagos, despite the lower price of entry for a model from their line. If you’re interested in deep-sea diving, a 600 meter Seamaster Planet Ocean is a worthwhile option, while they have a collection of limited editions that should retain value.

Of course, the same is true for the Rolex, which is instantly recognizable due to the classic style and the strength of the brand. In truth, they’re all viable, with the choice depending on your budget, as well as your personal preferences.
